Former Manchester United flop David Moyes celebrated the biggest result of his short tenure in Spain last night.
The Scot is now in charge at struggling La Liga side Real Sociedad and the Basque club pulled off a massive shock with a 1-0 victory over Barcelona, who left almost €300million in talent on the bench, including Lionel Messi and Neymar.
A Jordi Alba own goal after just 82 seconds proved the difference, and Moyes revelled in the success, saying: ‘It is the happiest night since I arrived in San Sebastian. We worked very hard. The players showed courage and defended incredibly.’
Spanish newspaper Marca praised Moyes’ organisation as Real were rarely troubled as they defended their lead. It said: ‘The early goal was played perfectly into the hands of Real Sociedad manager David Moyes, who had his team set up with two lines of four in their own half of the pitch.’
The result followed Valencia’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid, which ended the European champions’ 22-match competitive winning streak.
