Van der Sar was taken to hospital with a bleed to the brain

Edwin van der Sar is currently stable but his condition currently remains a cause for concern, his family says.

Van der Sar was rushed to hospital in Croatia on Friday after suffering a brain haemorrhage and remains in intensive care.

The former Manchester United, Ajax and Netherlands star has been on holiday in the country.

According to reports, the ex-goalkeeper collapsed and was taken to hospital by helicopter.

Former club Ajax posted a message on Facebook late Friday afternoon, reading: “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain.

“He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.

“The Van der Sar family, along with Ajax, is grateful and deeply touched by the many messages of support.”

Van der Sar won the Champions League with both Ajax and Manchester United and represented the Netherlands at the 1998 World Cup as they reached the semi-finals.

He was also twice on the losing side in Champions League finals with the English club. His final game before retiring was against Barcelona in the 2011.

He moved into non-playing roles at Ajax, serving as CEO until he stepped down in 2023.
