Eating crisps with fans earns David Moyes a two-game ban (sort of)

Crisp-gate wraps up...

Moyes now knows the consequences of taking snacks from strangers

The Sociedad manager was sent to the stands during his side’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal in the Copa del Rey, which sent them crashing out of the tournament by losing 3-2 on aggregate. Moyes was given his marching orders for lambasting the referee and making a glasses gesture with his hands.

After sauntering off the pitch, the former Manchester United boss climbed a barrier and sat in the stands. Some of the fans offered the Scot some snacks. Moyes gladly accepted an offering of crisps from one loyal supporter before flat-out refusing peanuts from another fan.

He received a one-match Copa ban for the initial red card, which was extended because of his antics after leaving the pitch. Unfortunately, consuming the crisps wasn’t what earned him the extra punishment. The ban was extended because he was not authorised to sit among the fans after being sent off.

However, some theorists believe he chose to sit in the prohibited area because of the promise of free treats. Therefore, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that the dastardly foil packet of crisps directly attributed to the ban being extended.
