Don’t diss the prodigal son
Eamon Dunphy went off on a massive rant last night.
That’s not news.
But it is news when his rant is so wide of the mark that you really do have to wonder if he has completely lost touch with reality.
The broadcaster was on 2FM’s Game On show last night, and was discussing this Saturday’s crucial clash with Scotland when the debate turned to Dunphy’s favourite topic of all time – Wes Hoolahan.
There is much chat among fans about whether the Norwich man should start the game at the Aviva, with Martin O’Neill previously expressing his feeling that the playmaker is not always a viable option when games are tight and defensive.
Dunphy thinks talk like that could lead to O’Neill getting the chop,
He’s talked stupidly about Wes Hoolahan being able to play at the Aviva but not being able to play away from home.
What pressure that puts on Wes when he goes on the pitch, that ‘the manager doesn’t really believe in me’.
And O’Neill is musing in public about whether to play Wes Hoolahan in away games. I mean that’s a sacking offence. The Martin O’Neill who achieved great things with Celtic, Leicester and even Wycombe was optimistic. He did instill belief in his players.
I mean he got to a Uefa Cup final with a team that overachieved but if you’re humming and hawing in public about Wes Hoolahan that’s outrageous. I’d sack him for that.
We doubt Martin O’Neill or Roy Keane will be especially bothered by the former Millwall man’s comments, but if there is ever a coup in the FAI and Eamon was to get the top job we know whose head would be on the chopping block straight away.
