Eamon Dunphy made an unexpected call during RTÉ’s Champions League coverage

Always spots an opportunity, our Eamon

Always on the ball.

There was an air of inevitability of what was witnessed at the Allianz Arena.

Arsenal succumbed to an embarrassing 5-1 defeat to German champions, Bayern Munich.

The complete capitulation which Arsenal displayed in the second half is something which we have all come to expect from this team.

Generally, when this team comes under sustained pressure, they crack and boy, that crack can be best described as a rupture.

The performance from the north London club was up there with one of their worst and it led to a blunt but apt description from former Arsenal player, Ian Wright.

Arsenal can be generally described as a team that lacks leadership, long gone are the days of Martin Keown and Patrick Viera.

However, there are some leaders in the team but the general problem is that there are not enough of them.

So when Laurent Koscielny departed with an injury at the start of the second half, Arsenal lost one of their biggest leaders and the subsequent shambles which ensued was predicted by some, including Eamon Dunphy.

Dunphy, speaking on RTÉ after Munich’s facile 5-1 victory, recalled that once he saw Koscielny go off injured, he was straight onto his bookmaker.

At least some people benefited from tonight’s result.
