Dundalk’s David McMillan was remarkably modest about his goalscoring heroics

Humble response

Dundalk can reach the Champions League play-off by defeating BATE Borisov in the final qualifying round.

Stephen Kenny’s men made it through to the next round of the competition after their 2-2 draw against Iceland’s FH Hafnarfjordur saw them progress on away goals.

David McMillan was the undoubted hero as he bagged a brace with two well taken efforts. The forward’s first came not too long after teammate Ronan Finn had missed a penalty.

In a post-match interview for the club, McMillan was entirely modest about his double. He said:

“I’ve been on the end of missed penalties myself; it’s never a good feeling.

“Ronan is a good friend of mine so I wanted to make sure it was something he wouldn’t regret. Thankfully, it was not.

“[For the first goal] the ball ricocheted into my path. It was there to be hit and I hit it.”

McMillan’s second goal saw him finish off a fine team move involving Dean Massey and Daryl Horgan. Again, McMillan’s take was a humble one:

“Daryl’s got the pace to get in behind and control the ball. He’s just put it on a plate for me. He has squared it right on my toe and I didn’t have to move out of my stride at all.

“Look, I’ve just side-footed it and it has went through the goalkeeper’s legs. In the end, that’s the goal that put us through.”

All about the team for McMillan but Dundalk fans won’t mind if he keeps finishing his chances and letting others take the credit.
