Arguably the biggest legend in MLS history wasn’t milking it on his big night. In fact, he was giving all the plaudits to Robbie Keane.
Landon Donovan bowed out at the top after a stunning nine-year career with LA Galaxy but, even though it was all about his swan song, he had special praise for the championship game’s Most Valuable Player.
“I’m going to miss him,” Donovan commented on the Irish captain. “In these games, it takes a special play and the more players you have on the field that can make that special play, the better. There’s no-one better than him at doing that and, when we needed him most, he came through.”
Robbie Keane collected the MVP award after scoring the extra time winner and he reflected on what have been four fantastic years in Los Angeles.
“It was a tough game, I thought there were a lot of nerves from both teams. We didn’t play as well as we can, but it doesn’t really matter now. We won and we’re the champions again.
“It certainly doesn’t get better than that. I’ve been here four years and won three championships. So far it’s been great, we’ll see what happens next.”
