Disgust as schoolboy referee suffers injuries in attack by team manager

Truly shocking scenes

Gareth Makim

This is shocking.

We’ve heard stories of the abuse directed at officials at youth sporting events from over zealous parents, but surely the managers of these teams should know better?

A schoolboy soccer referee has taken to Facebook to post details of an alleged attack during a fixture he was in charge of.

Dubliner Roy Kavanagh writes that he was ‘assaulted for no reason by a manager’ after a match on Saturday, and this morning posted pictures of bruising to his stomach and legs.

Obviously, with Gardaí investigating the incident it is impossible for Mr Kavanagh to provide any more information, but his story has elicited sympathy and disgust in equal measure.

This pretty much sums up our feelings on the situation as well, but all we can do is offer Mr Kavanagh our best wishes and hope that this story makes parents and managers of youth sports’ teams think twice before taking their frustrations out on the volunteers that make their teams’ activities possible.
