Diego Costa has been given an extra ban for a reason we’ve not heard before

Tom Victor

Diego Costa has seen his Premier League suspension extended by one match, because the red card against Everton in the FA Cup was his second of the season.

But wait, we hear you say, Diego Costa hadn’t been sent off before then. Well technically you’d be right, but we’re not about technicalities here, and nor are the Football Association.

You may remember the Spain international famously not seeing red for his part in Gabriel’s sending off when Chelsea beat Arsenal back in October.

Well, the FA have decided the three-game retrospective ban handed to Costa counts as a red card, and therefore the one against the Toffees is his second of the campaign.

As a result, the striker will not only miss this weekend’s meeting with Aston Villa, but he’ll also sit out the clash with Swansea City on April 9.

His absence could be crucial in the hard-fought battle to finish 10th in the Premier League.
