David Beckham explains his terror at being caught drinking by Alex Ferguson

No boozing in front of the boss

Alex Ferguson’s discipline was legendary and you only have to look at the players that fell out with him to know he didn’t tolerate any messing.

And the Scot, despite his long association of owning and working in pubs, and a fine wine collection by all accounts, was definitely not a man who would tolerate any boozing from his players.

But that was surely only while they were under his control. You would imagine grown men would be able to relax a little bit more in front of their old boss when meeting him in social situations.

Well it seems that David Beckham wasn’t going to take any chances when he met up with his old boss recently and found himself with a glass of wine in his hand.

Speaking on BBC Radio this morning to announce that he and Fergie were reuniting at Old Trafford next month, Beckham revealed his quick thinking to avoid a possible scolding from his old boss

“The other day I saw him for the first time in a long time. We’d never even think about having a little glass of wine or beer (as players) in front of him but the other day someone handed me a glass of wine and I was talking to him (Ferguson) for 20 minutes with the wine hidden behind my back. Me, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes all said the same thing, we all hid the glass of wine behind our back.”

Even after over as decade away from the clutches of Fergie its seems that old habits die hard.
