Damien Duff takes a giant step closer to Irish return

Bray or Tallaght?

Duffer could be playing SSE Airtricity League of Ireland football before the end of this season.

Melbourne City have released Damien Duff from the remainder of his short-term contract.

The former Blackburn, Chelsea and Ireland midfielder had his short A-League stint curtailed by an ankle injury, a little over two months ago.

Duff scored one goal in 15 appearances for City and was one of his team’s star players before injury struck. On Tuesday, City announced that Duff and four other players would not be having contract extensions or renewals.

While the renouncement, from Duff’s perspective, comes as no surprise, his early release could now spark interest from the League of Ireland.

The Dubliner has previously stated his desire to play a season of football in his home league. Shamrock Rovers, who already have Stephen McPhail on their books, appeared early favourites to secure his services.

On Monday, however, new Bray Wanderers boss Trevor Croly expressed an interest in signing Duff up. The veteran midfielder, who starred at World Cup 2002 and Euro 2012, is hoping to get back to full fitness by the start of June.

Other high profile Irish players plying their trade in the league are Liam Miller, Keith Fahey and Colin Healy.
