“‘It’s getting embarrassing now, I won’t lie to you.”
Damien Duff has explained why the Republic of Ireland’s search for a new manager has reached “embarrassing” promotions.
Ireland have still not appointed a manager to replace Stephen Kenny, who departed from his role last November, meaning that the country has been without a boss for four months, and it doesn’t look any closer to being sorted.
Lee Carsely was the number one talk, but it appears to have stalled due to financial disagreements, while names like Neil Lennon, Gus Poyet and Steve bruce have all been linked to the job.
Damien Duff explains why Ireland’s search for new manager has reached “embarrassing” proportions.
Former Ireland star Duff shares his brutally honest opinion on the whole process so far.
“‘It’s getting embarrassing now, I won’t lie to you,” the 44-year-old told the media at the RSC following the game.
“I’m not sure how long it can take to appoint a manager. Am I following it with interest? To be brutally honest, no. I follow the League of Ireland with ultra interest. I think the future of Irish football is in the League of Ireland if it’s brought on leaps and bounds with help from anyone and everyone.
“It’s the biggest best league in the world to me. I’ve lost touch with the Premier League, the Champions League, the senior job.”
Damien Duff on what he said when he was approached for Ireland managerial position.
Duff was then asked if he was ever considered for the role and whether anyone from the FAI made contact with him regarding the vacant position.
“How do I word this? Maybe through someone, through someone, through someone asked me would I be interested in speaking to someone,” he continued.
“Obviously, my answer was no. But how real it was, I don’t know. I’m sure it was just a box ticker because it was never going to happen and it’s never going to happen anytime soon.”
