Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal lay down a huge Euro 2016 marker

No mercy

Tom Victor

Just 24 hours after Spain suffered a shock defeat to Georgia, their neighbours made light work of their final pre-Euro 2016 opponents.

While some teams would just want to get the final game out of the way without any injuries, Portugal were in no mood for sympathy as they welcomed Estonia to Lisbon.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in a 7-0 demolition of the European minnows, with Ricardo Quaresma also firing home a double.

But the highlight was surely this cross from former Chelsea and Barcelona winger Quaresma to set up Ronaldo’s first.

More of this in France would go down very nicely. Very nicely indeed.

Portugal are in Group F of the European Championships, along with Austria, Hungary and Iceland.

If they win their group, they will face the second-placed team from the group containing Belgium, Italy, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland.

The demolition of Estonia is even more impressive when you consider Portugal’s record in qualifying.

In eight qualifying matches, Fernando Santos’ team scored just 11 goals in total and only four in their four home games.

With Cristiano Ronaldo playing the way he is, however, they could be surprise contenders to go very far indeed.
