Christian Benteke suffers possible knee ligament damage

He'll miss the next two games at least

Bad news, Liverpool fans.

Christian Benteke is out of the League Cup tie against Bournemouth, and possibly Saturday’s game against Chelsea, with the striker picking up another injury.

The Belgian striker had just returned to first-team action, and scored a brilliant header against Southampton last weekend, but is on the sidelines again after suffering knee ligament damage during training.

Jurgen Klopp was hoping to give the player a start for the first time in his tenure against Bournemouth, but Divock Origi is once again Liverpool’s only fit striker.

Benteke was sent for a scan on Tuesday, and the injury is not thought to be long-term, but, with Daniel Sturridge also injured, Liverpool’s striking woes continue.GettyImages-494208008Klopp is, however, hoping to start summer signing Roberto Firmino, and says he’s a fan of the player.

“He’s a pretty skilled player. I’d say a year ago for a few months he was best player in the Bundesliga,” Klopp said about the Brazilian.

“From the first day everyone could see he can be a very, very good player and when I heard Liverpool took him I thought, ‘good choice’.”

“He needed time when he came in but when he’s in he’s strong with the ball, physically strong, fast in a good football way, gets his body between opponent and ball. So he is an important player for us and I hope he can play [against Bournemouth].”
