Tuesday night was a big occasion for Progres Niederkorn.
But if anyone enjoyed the Luxembourg side’s first European victory more than the players involved, it was former Celtic forward Chris Sutton.
Sutton has dedicated his post-playing career to a combination of punditry and Rangers-bashing.
And there was not much in the way of sympathy from Sutton when he learned that Rangers had crashed out of the Europa League after suffering a 2-0 defeat away at last season’s fourth-placed finishers in the Luxembourg National Division.
In case you’ve not noticed, Sutton loves taking the piss out of his former side’s arch-rivals.
One particular aspect of Rangers’ European misadventure this week which Sutton relished was the fact that, only days earlier, Gers manager Pedro Caixinha had come out and publicly announced that he’d banned his players from wearing green boots “because it is the colour of Celtic.”
There wasn’t a green boot to be seen at the Stade Josy Barthel but, shockingly, that had no impact on the visitors’ performance.
And Sutton didn’t hesitate to point out that perhaps Caixinha’s focus should have been elsewhere this week.
Totally embarrassing from Rangers! Maybe concentrating on what goes on on the football pitch rather than boot colours would be wise…

The schadenfreude didn’t stop there.
Not in the Europa League it's not…. https://t.co/wq8go1SN0J

And he continued his gleeful mocking of the blue side of Glasgow into Wednesday morning…
Odd question?? Not a difficult one really…..One team went through to the next round the other didn't…. https://t.co/q4Y5NYPsla
