Chelsea’s comprehensive apology suggests Jose Mourinho’s feud with Eva Carneiro got out of hand

Eva Carneiro has reached a settlement with Chelsea in her constructive dismissal case against the club.

Jose Mourinho will not now have to testify at the employment tribunal. While the settlement is confidential, the court heard on Monday that the former team doctor had already rejected a settlement of £1.2million, it is assumed she will receive a sum in excess of this. New Manchester United manager Mourinho unexpectedly showed up at the tribunal in London, but his side of the bitter dispute will not now be heard. Carneiro was demoted from first team duties after rushing on to the field to treat Eden Hazard during Chelsea's opening fixture of their Premier League defence at home to Swansea. A Facebook post from Carneiro, thanking people for support, plus accusations Mourinho had called her "daughter of a whore" in Portuguese, ensured this was a particularly bitter dispute. Neither Carneiro or Mourinho would see Christmas at Stamford Bridge, and after the settlement was reached, Chelsea released an apology that cleared Carneiro of any hint of wrongdoing.

“The club regrets the circumstances which led to Dr Carneiro leaving the club and apologises unreservedly to her and her family for the distress caused. “We wish to place on record that in running onto the pitch Dr Carneiro was following both the rules of the game and fulfilling her responsibility to the players as a doctor, putting their safety first. “Dr Carneiro has always put the interests of the club’s players first. Dr Carneiro is a highly competent and professional sports doctor. She was a valued member of the club’s medical team and we wish her every success in her future career. “Jose Mourinho also thanks Dr Carneiro for the excellent and dedicated support she provided as first team doctor and he wishes her a successful career.”
