Dermot Desmond has made a very bold prediction.
The Irishman is Celtic’s major shareholder and believes the Hoops have outgrown the Scottish Premiership. He also believes the club will move to play south of the border in the next ten years.
Speaking on Sky Sports this evening Desmond, who is a multi-millionaire and is a major racing fan, feels the club, along with bitter rivals Rangers, will be playing in a ‘British Premiership’ in the next decade
“We would like to compete in the holy grail in England.”
“It will bring money into Scotland and rekindle football in Scotland having [Manchester] United, Arsenal and others. Maybe it’s going to be 10 years but I think it’s inevitable.”
“Rangers and Celtic are among the top 10 teams in Britain and some of the biggest teams in the world and they should be competing at the highest level. I think it’s inevitable there will be changes.”
Six years ago English league sides rejected the chance to have the Scottish teams play out of Scotland, but the current Celtic manager Ronny Delia has backed Desmond’s plans for the club and is hopeful Celtic would play at Anfield and Old Trafford on a regular basis.
“It’s not easy to do things very quickly in Britain – it takes time.”
“But Celtic is a team that should have the opportunity to play in the best league and hopefully in the end we can get into the Premiership or a league that is more of a British thing.”
