Celtic and Rangers interested in former Man United prospect

Robert Redmond

He only played nine times for Manchester United.

Celtic and Rangers are interested in signing Nick Powell, according to reports in Scotland.

Powell, currently playing for Wigan Athletic in the Championship, is out of contract at the end of the season, so he can negotiate with clubs from outside of England.

The report states that German side RB Leipzig and Premier League team Brighton and Hove Albion are also interested in the player, who turns 25 in March.

The former Manchester United midfielder is said to have been offered terms by Celtic. Rangers reportedly plan to match the offer made by their Glasgow rivals.

According to The Mirror, Brendan Rodgers wanted to sign Powell for Liverpool back in 2012 before the midfielder left Crewe Alexandra for United.

So, it’s possible that the Celtic manager has retained his interest and wants to take him to Celtic Park.

Powell was highly rated as a young player with Crewe and earned a £6m move to Man United.

He scored on his debut for Alex Ferguson’s team in a 4-0 win over Wigan in September 2012.

However, Powell would only make another eight appearances for the club.

Following loan spells with Wigan, Hull City and Leicester City, he was released by United at the end of the 2015/16 season.

Powell has rebuilt his career at Wigan in recent seasons.

He has scored 25 goals in 84 games for the Latics and helped them earn promotion from League One last season.
