Man United summer signing was rejected by Burnley days before transfer

Rory Fleming

The Burnley COO revealed the news in a radio interview this week.

Events surrounding Man United have been difficult to say the least over the last number of weeks, from their defeat at Arsenal to the very public spat between manager Erik ten Hag and winger Jadon Sancho.

It was hoped the international window may provide some respite from the headlines, however Harry Maguire’s performance for England away to Scotland ensured that the club maintained its place on the back pages.

Now, more dispiriting news for United fans has begun to emerge ahead of this weekend’s clash with Brighton, with the Mirror reporting that one of the club’s summer signings only ended up at Old Trafford after being rejected by Burnley a number of days prior.

Spanish full-back Sergio Reguilon, who signed on loan for Erik ten Hag’s side on the final day of the transfer window, had been deemed surplus to requirements at both Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur over the course of a few months.

Burnley turn down player before Man United transfer:

And now, to make matters worse, it appears that Vincent Kompany didn’t particularly rate the 26-year-old either after turning down the chance to sign him following the Lancashire club’s failed pursuit of Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen.

“Left-backs are a bit of rarity. Look at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in world football. Luke Shaw goes down injured and they take a player from Tottenham who we’d been offered three or four days earlier,” Burnley’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Matt Williams told BBC Lancashire.

United themselves had been chasing down the loan signing of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, however that pursuit came to a shuddering halt when the London side would not agree to a break clause in the January window which could allow United to cancel the loan.

This led to a frantic deadline day dash for cover for the absent Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, with Reguilon proving to be in the right place at the right time and securing a move to Old Trafford.

The six-time capped Spain international featured just 11 times in the entirety of last season for Atletico Madrid whilst on loan, but could make his Red Devils debut on Saturday as high-flying Brighton visit the Theatre of Dreams.
