First he was going to take some time away from football. Then we heard maybe he would listen if Liverpool came calling. And now, once again, Jurgen Klopp has reiterated that he will indeed be going on a sabbatical from football.
The Borussia Dortmund boss made the announcement after the German side lost to Wolfsburg in the final of the DFB Pokal, Klopp’s final game in charge of the Bundesliga side.
‘After seven intense and emotional years, I think it’s a good idea to let the numerous memories settle in before I take on a new challenge with my team refreshed and motivated,’ said Klopp. ‘I’m going to take a break until further notice.’
Liverpool fans hoping to see the back of manager Brendan Rodgers had been encouraged by talk of mutual interest between the German and the club, but today’s news will only strengthen Rodgers’ position as he heads into a series of crucial meetings with the Reds’ American owners.
Club chairman Tom Werner is due on Merseyside in the coming days to begin the process of unpacking this season’s disappointments, with Rodgers’ future and the current set-up of the transfer committee certain to be discussed.
