Brendan Rodgers sees a bright future for a young Irish footballer.
The Liverpool manager, speaking ahead of his side’s Europa League against Sion, has backed Daniel Cleary to have a “very good career” and has included the 19 year old defender in the provisional squad for the game at Anfield.
“Daniel is a very good player, he is going to have a very good career in the game. He is very committed,” Rodgers said.
“I have seen developments in my time, as a young player, I’ve seen him improve.”
Cleary signed for Liverpool from Dublin side Crumlin United back in 2011, and made his first senior appearance in a pre-season friendly earlier this year.
The Dubliner was also an unused in Liverpool’s last Europa League tie, away to Bordeaux, and will be the first Irish-born academy player to feature for the club’s first-team since Richie Partridge back in 2004.
Rodgers, while predicting a bright future for Cleary, also said the youngster will get first-team action this season one way or another this season, and a loan move could be on the cards.
“I’m sure if he doesn’t get the game time here at the moment there will probably be a loan period for him.
“But in the mean time he is playing in the Under-21s and playing very well.”
