Brendan Rodgers has a message for angry Celtic fans

Robert Redmond

The honeymoon period for Brendan Rodgers at Celtic is already over.

The Scottish champions succumbed to arguably the most embarrassing defeat in their 128-year history on Tuesday night, losing to a part-time team from Gibraltar.

Lincoln Red Imps beat Celtic 1-0 in the first-leg of the second-round qualifier for the Champions League, Lee Casciaro, a policeman, scored the goal.

Following the defeat, Rodgers said “there’s no embarrassment” in the result, and on Wednesday preached a message of calm to the club’s supporters.

“The message to them (the fans) is to stay calm,” the former Liverpool manager told Celtic’s official website.

“This is a good group of players, they are good guys who are working hard and in a week’s time we will need the support next week to hopefully get the job done next week.”

“There is no panic. We know the type of quality of player to get in and help the team and squad and that’s something we will work on. In the meantime we have enough quality players to get through into the next round. We have to stay together as a team.

“It’s a two-legged affair and our objective here is to get through and I have seen enough in the game for us to get through in the second game.”

Rodgers’ side play the return leg next Wednesday, hopefully the Red Imps’ left-back will get the day off work.
