BREAKING: Anthony Stokes has left Celtic, potential move to England on the cards

Onto the next chapter

Ben Kiely

After six years, Anthony Stokes’ Celtic career has reached its end.

The Scottish side have released the Irishman as a free agent after deciding not to trigger a clause to extend his contract by a year.

Stokes had an impressive run with Celtic scoring 77 goals in 192 games. However, he had fallen out of favour in recent seasons and spent the second half of the 2015/16 campaign on loan at Hibernian where he scored twice in the Scottish Cup final victory over Rangers.

New Rotherham boss Alan Stubbs, whom Stokes worked under at Hibernian last season, has admitted his interest in snapping up the striker. However, he believes there will be stiff competition for his signature.

“I wouldn’t rule out an interest in Anthony Stokes, but we wouldn’t be on our own.

“There will be a number of clubs interested him, particularly if it’s a free transfer.”

“I know him from his time at Hibs and at Celtic. Obviously, it doesn’t hurt that I have a good relationship with him already.”

The Celtic faithful have been wishing Stokes well on Twitter since the club confirmed his departure.
