A selfless act from a player who had spent six months without a club.
New Birmingham City signing Guy Moussi will donate every penny of his salary to charity. The midfielder, who was released by Nottingham Forest in the summer, signed a two month deal with the Championship strugglers and instantly asked the club to pledge his wages to four charities. Moussi’s money will be split between Birmingham City Disabled Supporters Club, Stop Ebola, the TEV Soma Charity, which raises money for the Soma Mine disaster in Turkey, and a church in his native Paris.
‘I am pleased because I think it is nice sometimes to give back’, Moussi told the Birmingham Mail. ‘I think there are a lot of people doing it but maybe because I am a footballer it is maybe in the spotlight. I don’t want to do that to say “Oh yes, I am giving a donation”. It was just something I want to do and I think there are a lot of people who are in the shadows who give even more than me. But if I can be an example for some people, that is good’.
Moussi also revealed the motivation behind his choice of charities: ‘I have got a church in France I want to donate to and because I am African as well, my parents are from Cameroon, I wanted to help with Ebola a little bit. ‘I wanted to make a donation to the club because they helped me to play again, I decided to make a donation to the disabled supporters’.
‘I wanted to find a good club, I didn’t want to go somewhere just because of the money or something like that’, the 29 year-old said. So I wasn’t in a rush, I am Christian and I just said to myself ‘Listen, you need to go somewhere that you feel right in your mind and heart. But I decided I didn’t want to play for money. It felt right for me’.
Moussi’s contract expires on January 18th but hopefully the club decided to extend his stay.
