Bear plays vuvuzela in traffic as World Cup gets underway

Jack O'Toole

You knew there would be some weird stuff happening at the FIFA World Cup in Russia, you just didn’t think it would be this weird and happen this soon.

Following Russia’s 5-0 win over Suadi Arabia in the opening game at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, a bear was filmed sitting in the back of a jeep playing a vuvuzela.

Irish journalist Peter Staunton uploaded the video on his Twitter account as fans ran towards the vehicle with their phones to try and capture one of the weirder World Cup fan moments we’ve seen.

On a slightly more normal note, but still quite weird by international football standards, Russia manager Stanislav Cherchesov briefly left his post-match press conference following the win over Saudi Arabia to take a phone call from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“It was the head of state,” said Cherchesov upon his return to the press conference. “He asked me to share his thanks with the team for the performance that they put on and he asked me to keep playing like this.”

Cherchesov insisted that his team would not be getting ahead of themselves following their opening win of the tournament but that his team are on the right track.

“To kid many people is very difficult, even for such masters as my players,” added Cherchesov.

“We haven’t been kidding anybody, we’ve been doing our job with a clear understanding of what is expected of us.

“We are not getting ahead of ourselves,” he added. “We saw that we are on the right track but we should forget this game and concentrate on the next one.”
