Impressive.
Bastian Schweinsteiger has set a new international football record that will take some beating.
The 31-year-old midfielder started for Germany against France in the Euro 2016 semi-final in Marseille, and in the process made his 38th appearance at a World Cup or European Championship – the most by any player in history.
Schweinsteiger surpassed his former German teammate Miroslav Klose, who holds the record for the most goals (16) in the history of the World Cup, obtained at the World Cup in Brazil two years ago.
Former German internationals Lothar Matthaus and Philipp Lahm have 36 and 34 appearances at World Cups and European Championships respectively, while Italian legend Paolo Maldini has 36.
Considering 38 caps would represent a good international career, Schweinsteiger’s 38 appearances at major finals is very impressive.
