Barcelona move another step closer to leaving La Liga

Could the European Super League really happen?

SportsJOE

Things might be about to get a bit lonely for Real Madrid in La Liga.

The Catalan independence movement received a massive boost as its local parliament voted in favour of succession from Spain on Monday.

Back in September the head of La Liga, Javier Tebas, said that Barcelona would not be allowed to compete in the Spanish league, saying: “They would not be able to play in La Liga because legislation would not allow it.”

Lionel Messi and co. might not have a lot of time to find a new home, as Catalan officials apparently believe that independence could be just 18 months away.

A possible landing spot for the defending European champions could be France, where Monaco play their football despite not technically being a part of France.

But some believe that the independence of Catalunya could be the catalyst for a cross-continental super league involving Europe’s top teams.

Only time will tell.
