With a host on injuries threatening to derail any hopes of a Premier League title, Arsene Wenger appears poised to move for a new midfielder in January.

Arsenal are particularly short in the middle of the park, with Santi Carzola, Jack Wilshere, Francis Coquelin and Mikel Arteta all currently sidelined.

Having been linked with moves to Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho in recent weeks, it now seems that Wenger has set his sights on a Premier League midfielder.

Southampton’s Victor Wanyama is, according to The Mirror, Arsenal’s main transfer target in the new year having been monitored by the club prior to his move from Celtic to the south coast.

The report claims that Wanyama’s performances in England have convinced Wenger to make a move for the Kenyan international when the transfer window opens.

After Southampton paid over £12m to bring Wanyama to the club, it’s not unthinkable that Wenger will be spending over £20m if he is to bring him to the Emirates.
