The more things change, the more they stay the same.
In a season where Chelsea’s title defence was over by Halloween and Leicester won the league at a canter, football fans knew anything was possible.
Well, almost anything.
Despite putting together the strongest challenge to Leicester’s title run this season, Spurs found a way to collapse in spectacular fashion and once more finish below Arsenal in the table.
Coming into the final day of the season, Mauricio Pochettino’s men knew they needed just a point against the already-relegated Newcastle to finish above their North London rivals for the first time since 1995. Things didn’t exactly go to plan.

Goals from Alexander Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum gave the Magpies a two-goal lead before Erik Lamela pulled one back for Spurs. Meanwhile, Arsenal held a slender 1-0 lead over Aston Villa.
Gooners went from nervous to p*ssing their pants when Mitrovic saw red. But they needn’t have worried as Spurs dialled their “Spursyness” all the way up to 11 and conceded three goals to a relegated side who had their best striker sent off.
Olivier Giroud found the net twice more, and Mikel Arteta will try to claim ownership of Mark Bunn’s own goal as Arsenal ended up routing Villa for a 4-0 win.
And Arsenal’s annual celebration of finishing above their rivals – known as St Totteringham’s Day – could begin.
