Angry Jamie Carragher rings up radio station to defend Liverpool and slates Chelsea

"Shut up talking absolute S****"

Robert Redmond

“Doesn’t everyone do that (live off history), Chelsea haven’t got any so it’s difficult for them.”

You’d imagine nothing could spoil Jamie Carragher’s evening.

The former Liverpool defender had just witnessed one of the most famous European nights at Anfield, with Dejan Lovren scoring a last minute winner against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League quarter-final.

The Reds won 4-3 on the night, 5-4 on aggregate, and it was a game few Liverpool fans will ever forget. Most football fans, regardless of their allegiance, seemed to enjoy the game’s dramatic conclusion – except Jason Cundy.

The former Chelsea defender is a presenter on UK radio station talkSPORT, and rather than focus on what had been an incredible game of football, Cundy asked why Liverpool were under achieving in the Premier League, before dismissing the importance of the Europa League, a competition his beloved Chelsea won in 2013.

Carragher was listening to the station on his journey home from Anfield, took issue with Cundy’s comments and was invited to ring in.

“The Premier League has nothing to do with tonight,” the former Liverpool defender said live on-air.

“You’ve got to (have) respect for Liverpool, it’s a special night and not many clubs can have a night like that. We’re very lucky. Even if you don’t like Liverpool, you have to accept that.”

“Tonight wasn’t the night to talk about things like that. Tonight is the night to talk about the atmosphere, a great comeback. It was an unbelievable night. The story is the unbelievable comeback. Klopp has done brilliantly since he has come in, he hasn’t got a great squad.”

“Listen, you don’t like Liverpool, Jason. Let’s be honest. You were quite wound up that Liverpool fans were coming on, ringing up and enjoying it. And instead of just taking it, taking the medicine for tonight, you just couldn’t help yourself.”

Cundy’s main issue appeared to be with Liverpool fans “living off history”, to which Carragher replied:

“Well doesn’t everyone do that (live off history), to a certain extent. Chelsea haven’t got any so it’s difficult for them.”

Carragher played 737 times for Liverpool, but we reckon that retort has made him even more of a club legend with the fans.
