Well, well, well. Would you believe it?
The close of the transfer window is just days away and Manchester United still have business to do.
Yes, of course you’d believe it.
Jose Mourinho, as has been widely reported all summer long, wants a new defender in time for the new season. Despite being linked with approximately 300 centre-halves over the course of this summer, it’s believed that Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld is his number one priority.
So far, the two clubs have yet to agree a fee for the player, with United seemingly ruling out any kind of swap deal involving Anthony Martial.
According to the Mirror, United are reluctant to meet Spurs’ £55m asking price given that his value is set to plummet to £25m in just 6 months’ time. Instead, they’re poised to make a final offer of around £40m for the 29-year-old.
Should that be knocked back, the report adds that Mourinho has given the green light for the club to try and sign an alternative – most likely to be Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, after United made contact with the German champions about a possible transfer. Barcelona have also offered them two players in a swap deal for Pogba.
Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina have also been linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent weeks, though the chances of either signing for United in the coming days appear increasingly slim.
