The League of Ireland Premier Division is set to be restructured, according to The Irish Times.

The top flight of Irish football is set to be reduced from 12-teams to 10-teams in 2018, following the recommendation made by the Conroy report.

One of the main points of the report by Declan Conroy, a former communications consultant to the FAI, was reducing the amount of the teams in the Premier Division.

Other recommendations included targeting a television deal outside of Ireland for the league, and working on a way to raise the profile of clubs in the local community.

Of all the points of the report though, the restructuring of the league appeared the most critical. Some clubs are reportedly unhappy with the standard of some of the weaker teams in the division, arguing they were reducing the competitiveness of the league.

However, there were others who sought for just one division of 16-teams.

If the change is ratified this week, next season will be the final year of a 12-team division, and three teams will be relegated.
