The central midfield is always the trickiest position when you sit down to pick a greatest Premier League XI.
Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Frank Lampard and Patrick Vieira are largely considered the best midfielders to play in England’s top flight.
Another, Steven Gerrard, was asked to rank them in order during an interview for the Daily Mail and he gave Mayfield’s favourite son the honour of top spot.
“Keane No 1. The rest? They’re all different. Frank’s the best goalscoring midfielder, Scholes the best footballer, Vieira the most difficult opponent… I loved playing against all of them.”
Gerrard clearly hasn’t taken Keane’s previous digs at him to heart. When asked once about whether he felt that United missed out by not signing the former Liverpool captain, Keane responded by saying: “No, we want to try win something.”
Still, imagine a midfield three of Keane, Scholes and Gerrard. That would have been flippin’ amazing.
