A campaign has been launched to make Transfer Deadline Day a Bank Holiday in the UK

Who wouldn't vote for this?

Sean Nolan

With an election coming up across the water this surely has to be in every party’s manifesto

We’re no political experts but if we were running a party across the water, we’d be slipping this idea into our manifesto to nab a few handy votes. Change.org, the site where members of the public can create and launch petitions for any issue that takes their fancy, have one on their site today that we reckon will be very popular indeed.

The campaign is to make January Transfer Deadline Day a Bank Holiday in the UK, a frankly perfect idea. Not only is it a day when, for better or worse, you’ll watch a stupid amount of Sky Sports News, but an extra Bank Holiday at this time of the year would be very much welcomed here, and we’re sure our UK cousins would feel the same.

You won’t be surprised to hear that Sky Bet are behind the campaign, but as they point out, the UK only has eight Bank Holidays at the minute, way behind the EU average.

As far as we can see, they have 10,000 signatures already but we expect that to rise pretty quickly. It is unlikely to succeed but if it does, we’ll be on the phone to Enda and the rest of them before you can say ‘Darren Bent is in a helicopter over Sheffield’.
