However, Herrera's absence, at the moment, is actually beneficial for the side. Most expected Mourinho to start with a three-man midfield this season of Matic, Herrera and Pogba. However, an extra midfielder is unnecessary against bottom-half of the table teams such as West Ham and Swansea. The extra attacking player, in the form of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial from the bench, has been very beneficial so far. Both have scored, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been fantastic, setting up four goals in two games.
Mourinho has let the hand-brake off against the so-called lesser sides. After coming unstuck against so many teams they were expected to beat last season, this can only be welcomed by United supporters and the team are reaping the rewards so far.
However, United fans still shouldn't be too worried about Herrera's absence from the starting line-up, because he will undoubtedly be called upon for games against bigger teams. It's highly unlikely that Mourinho picks a team for a match against Chelsea or Liverpool or Manchester City, or a big Champions League game, without Herrera.
The Spaniard was not only United's best player last season, earning the complete trust of his manager, but he was probably the team's most important player. Pogba is United's most expensive player, David de Gea is the the team's most talented player, and Romelu Lukaku will hope to become United's talisman, taking over from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But Herrera was the one who knitted it all together.

The midfielder carried out Mourinho's instructions on the pitch and showed in games last season, such as Chelsea at home and Liverpool away, a level of tactical discipline and game intelligence his manager seeks from his players. That hasn't changed, and Herrera will still be Mourinho's go-to player in big games.
Right now, starting Pogba and Matic in midfield allows United to play with more freedom and they could put four goals past a few more teams before the season is over. Herrera still has a big part to play for United.Explore more on these topics:
