Johan Cruyff, a sporting icon.
A legend of the soccer world. An inspiration to the whole civilised world.
Moments of magic in any sport and their effect are transferable. When Johan Cruyff does something as daring and as skillful and as momentous as what he did against Sweden in 1974, that’s as relevant and as inspiring to a hurler in Carlow as it is to a footballer in Holland.
Cruyff’s turn became a symbol of Total Football and it will never be forgotten. It became a symbol of sport in its purest form – the way it was supposed to be played.
So we put the question out there: is there any GAA player who has done something as magical? Is there a piece of audacious genius that was performed at the top level that will have kids replicating it up and down the country?
We all loved the Cruyff turn. But is there any GAA skill that has been named after the man that created it? The 'Canning Cut' maybe?

It turns out, there are plenty.
The Seanie Shuffle
Everyone knows Sean Cavanagh goes to his right.
And yet no-one can stop him.
This one was in big demand.
The Brogan Bounce
Dive in on Alan Brogan at your peril. Stand off Alan Brogan at your peril.
The Joe Pass
A little bit of Canning magic. Pure genius.
The Rock
That’s what Diarmuid O’Sullivan’s shoulder has become known as. Just ‘The Rock’. Nothing else.
It’s also believed to be where the term BOOM originated from.
The Fitzgerald Sideline
Obviously.

The DJ Shuffle
@SportsJOE_GAA go way with your canning cut! It will always be "The DJ Shuffle" #thebestever

Carey’s coming inside… no he’s not.
The McManamon Charge
If Kevin can’t go around you, he’ll go straight through you.
The Walsh Wallop
Get the hell out of the way.
The Gooch
Quick-thinking, no inhibitions, serious opportunism and unmatchable execution.
The Páidà Punch
Not all of them are pure, total football.
The Murphy Magic
No-one even thought to suggest this outrageous piece of play from Michael Murphy. The dink, the charge, the very, very outside of the boot. Unreal.
