Zaur Antia blasts ‘disgraceful’ decision to deny Ireland’s Michael O’Reilly place at Olympics

Controversial

Zaur Antia was far from happy at the outcome of Wednesday’s middleweight box-off.

Michael O’Reilly missed out in the third-place box-off when the judges scored a victory for Hosam Abdin of Egypt.

And it meant that the Portlaoise man was also denied a place in the Olympics in what was a box-off qualifier too.

O’Reilly will have two more chances to make Rio and, even though he leaves Doha with a bronze medal guaranteed, there was a sour taste left in the Irish camp after the result that had his opponent Abdin unanimously ahead in the first two rounds.

“I’m absolutely gutted, I don’t know what went on, it’s just ridiculous,” O’Reilly said after the fight. “In my mind I was up and won every round easy. I’m still in shock.”

And that wasn’t just the view of the fighter.

Zaur Antia also had a pop at the decision after he claimed that O’Reilly had won every round.

There was better news for Belfast’s Michael Conlan however who claimed gold at Bantamweight despite going down in the third.

His gold medal completes a ridiculous year for one of Ireland’s most promising boxers who got engaged, had a baby, qualified for Rio, won the Euros, was voted boxer of the tournament and is now a world champion. Decent enough 2015.
