It was a disappointing night for the Dubliner in the US.
Patrick Hyland’s dream of becoming a world champion was shattered in ruthless fashion by reigning WBC featherweight belt holder Gary Russell last night.
The American claimed the 16th knockout of his 28-fight career by dropping Hyland three times in quick succession in the second round at the Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut.
It was clear from the early exchanges that Hyland might struggle, as the 32-year-old Tallaght man struggled to land anything on Russell in the opening three minutes.

A right hook felled the Irish fighter just 45 seconds into the second stanza and, sniffing blood in the water, Russell went in for the kill, sending Hyland to the canvas twice more before the referee rightfully stepped in.
