Michael Conlan angrily confronts Olympic judges after scandalous loss

He was livid

Patrick McCarry

Four years of hard, hard work down the drain because of three judges that were clearly watching a different bout.

Michael Conlan is DONE with amateur boxing after the farcical scenes that saw him lose to Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin. The fact that it was a unanimous decision – all three scoring it 29-28 – makes it all the more farcical.

24 hours on from Katie Taylor’s controversial defeat to her Finnish opponent, Conlan was Irish boxing’s last hope.

He was far and away the better boxer in the first round but all three judges scored against him. Conlan took the second and looked to have edged the third but the judges didn’t see it that way. As Nikitin’s arm was raised aloft, the chorus of boos that rang out told you all you need to know.

As he left the ring, Conlan ripped off his vest and continued his tirade as he flung a card from a volunteer’s table.

After that confrontation, he gave a passionate, memorable interview to RTE.
