Careful now.
Paul Kimmage has caused a bit of a stir today when he took to Twitter to denounce Katie Taylor’s most recent awards.
The Irish boxing legend was voted the most admired Irish sports personality of 2014 in the results for the PSG Sponsorship Sport Sentiment Index 2014. And Taylor’s exploits in Jeju were also crowned as the most memorable moment as the Bray boxer went on to clinch an unprecedented fifth world title.
But sports journalist Kimmage was relatively unimpressed and he aired his bemusement at the votes on social network.
What a load of tripe. pic.twitter.com/WIt8Kal0ws

Nothing but admiration for Katie Taylor but her “5th World title was the most memorable/iconic Irish sporting moment of 2015.” A joke.

The Dubliner had his backers for his opinions in what has been a fine year for Irish sport. The Guardian’s Ewan Murray and the Irish Independent’s Daniel McDonnell agreed with his sentiments.
@McDonnellDan @PaulKimmage glad I’m not the only one to be slightly miffed by her status!

It wasn’t long though until Kimmage was being called out as wave upon wave of Taylor defenders voiced their discontent at his… discontent.

@GordoMcG bitter grumble

@PaulKimmage They asked people, and that is what they said. Katie was under-appreciated before, London, so this is just a re-balancing, no?

@PaulKimmage her “5th world title” equals record number of world titles held.. therefore deserving of iconic status..

@McDonnellDan @PaulKimmage maybe people can appreciate how much it takes to be world champ of anything let alone 5 times. #getoverit

A fantastic sports journalist. I do like him and his work. But, @PaulKimmage is one seriously contrary man sometimes. #negative #loves2rant
