Title fight ends in farce as referee stops bout ten seconds early, saves Timothy Bradley from getting KO’d

Yet another farcical way for boxing to find its way into the headlines

Timothy Bradley last night fought Jessie Vargas for an interim WBO welterweight belt that Floyd Mayweather has claimed to be vacating, and the Bradley emerged victorious thanks to a unanimous points decision.

Bradley dominated the fight, but Vargas has plenty of reason to feel aggrieved as the final round ended in bizarre fashion. As the clocked ticked down, Vargas finally had Bradley teetering, only for referee Pat Russell to step in between the fighters with ten seconds remaining and signal the fight was over.

The previously undefeated Vargas celebrated, believing he had won the title but Russell later admitted he thought he had heard the final bell, costing Vargas the chance to finish Bradley off.

“All I needed was one more shot,” Vargas said. “Those seven seconds cost me the fight.”

The rematch will be announced in ten… nine…
