Absolutely furious

The only fight to rival Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez on Sunday morning was the screaming match between Teddy Atlas and Stephen A Smith afterward.

Fight fans have the right to feel aggrieved over the result of Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez, but few can have qualms over the fight itself.

The two best middleweights in the world put on a dazzling show of the fistic arts over 12 rounds, but one judge’s showing on the night left a horrible feeling in the pit of everyone;s stomach.

Judge Adalaide Byrd scoring the fight 118-110 in favour of Canelo will deservedly be discussed for the foreseeable future. While most fans tend to lean towards a Golovkin victory, the general consensus was that it was a close fight. No one had it that dominant in favour of the Mexican superstar.

Veteran trainer and boxing commentator Teddy Atlas certainly didn’t agree with the scoring of the fight. He gave an impassioned rant on ESPN after the fight which was based around the old saying, ‘I told you so.’

“How can I stand here all week and say that there is going to be a controversial outcome? How do I know that?”

While Atlas commended both fighters on their performances inside the ring, he was not happy with what he saw as confirmation that the sport is controlled by the almighty dollar.

“Follow the money. Boxing doesn’t honor the things it should honor. It honors money, control, power. And there’s only certain power brokers in boxing, certain promoters, and they have the power. They have control who the judges are going to be, who the judges aren’t going to be, who they’re going to vote for. Las Vegas, where the money is going to come back there for the rematch.
