Talk about exposure.
Gervonta Davis has been given one hell of an opportunity by his mentor because Floyd Mayweather has seemingly given the IBF junior lightweight champion the chance to shine in the co-main event ahead of the biggest sporting event of 2017.
Setting the table for the spectacle that is Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor, Davis will get the chance to shine under the brightest spotlight of his young career to date.
We always knew that Mayweather’s protege would likely feature on the card at some point but Davis confirmed to TMZ that he will, in fact, be one half of the co-main event on August 26.
“Yes,” he said when asked if he’d be on the undercard. “I’m the co-main event.”
Davis is 18-0 in professional boxing, with his most recent victory coming in London, where he stopped Liam Walsh in the third round and the southpaw is currently ranked as the sixth best junior lightweight in the world by The Ring magazine.
“It feels great,” Davis added. “Just having my hometown back me, Under Armour back me and Floyd Mayweather back me and now I’m on the undercard, it feels amazing.”
An opponent has yet to be selected but ‘Tank’ remains typically confident regardless of who will be standing opposite him next month.
“There’s a few names that they’ve mentioned,” he said. “And I believe that both of them will get knocked out.”
Pay-per-view records are expected to shatter for the card, which will be promoted by Mayweather Promotions and feature several other fighters from the 49-0 great’s stable.
Mayweather is heavily favoured to defeat the Irishman, who has never competed in boxing before and while it’s been almost six years since ‘Money’ has stopped an opponent, Davis expects that to change at the T-Mobile Arena.
“I believe that Floyd will play with him [McGregor] and then knock him out,” Davis said.
