Olympic athletes everywhere could learn a thing or two from David Oliver Joyce’s stance on Rio 2016

David Oliver Joyce has only gone and summed up sport.

The Athy fighter secured his place in the last 16 of the 60kg division when he took a unanimous decision over Seychelles’ Andrique Allisop in Brazil.

The second Irish fighter to step between the ropes at Rio 2016 followed up Steven Donnelly’s victory with one of his own.

Ireland’s boxers are believed to be the country’s best chance for medal success and the early signs are certainly promising.

After Joyce’s hand was raised, the 29-year-old gave an extraordinarily refreshing interview in which he explained that he’s just going to enjoy his time in the ring and not put any undue pressure on himself.

“This is where I’m meant to be,” he told RTÉ Sport. “And this is where I want to be.

“I’m going to enjoy every moment of it in that ring where I do my best things and that’s where it’s all working for me.”

After being asked about the experience, he admitted that the outcome of his Games is out of his control and all he can do is give it his all.

He continued: “There were times when I wanted to finish it but motivation and sacrifice and all the stuff got me where I am today and in that ring I’m going to enjoy every moment of it and give everything I have in the ring.

“And if that’s good enough to bring me through and be the champion, fair dues.”
