One of female boxing’s most high profile fighter’s has said she will fight Katie Taylor, claiming it is the biggest fight to make in the sport.
Mikaela Mayer is a former US Olympian and signed with promotional heavyweights Top Rank in 2017 after turning professional.
Todd du Boef, president of Top Rank declared after she signed;
“Mikaela’s talent and personality translates to unique marketability. Not only are we confident she will succeed as a professional fighter but she will elevate the women’s boxing category.”
The former model is seen as female boxing’s answer to Ronda Rousey, the US Olympic medallist in Judo who took the world of mixed-martial-arts by storm, becoming the biggest star the UFC had ever seen, before Conor McGregor came along.
The LA based fighter trained with Rousey ahead of her UFC comeback fight against Amanda Nunes last year, however the fight turned out be a short night for the Olympic bronze medallist who has now defected to professional wrestling.
Mayer was a guest on this week’s Ariel Helwani MMA show. The famed journalist brought up the possibility of a fight with Ireland’s own Katie Taylor, probably the most popular female boxer world wide at present.
The American claimed that the fight will definitely happen, it’s just a case of getting the timing right so that all eyes will be on them.
“Oh Yeah, it’s gonna happen, it just needs to happen at the right time, because it would be a shame if the world wasn’t watching.”
Mayer admitted that she first has some unfinished business to attend to in her own weight class, before stepping up in weight to take on Taylor.
“It’s too son now, I’m still able to make 130 (lbs), she’s fighting at 135.
“I’m going to take the belts at 130, and take that division while I still can, and sometime next year i’ll move up to 135 and start fighting the girls there.
“I think it’ll be great because we’ll both be champs, both have belts, but there’s a lot of other girls too, so we’ll see, we’ll see.”
Helwani was quick to point out that he wasn’t disparaging the other fighter’s, but that a bout against Taylor would be the biggest fight to make in female boxing at present.
“It is definitely big, she’s a huge following in Europe, a huge following in Ireland. Top Rank is helping me build my following here in the United States. I think it’s going to be an exciting fight.” said Mayer.
One thing is for sure, a fight between the pair would be a huge payday for both women, as well as being the huge fight that female boxing needs.
