Michael Conlan’s brother targeting world title on same card he is fighting on

He's in line for a title shot

Let’s hope there’s no dodgy judging this time round.

With all this talk of Anthony Joshua going 19-0 at the weekend, there is not near as much conversation about Jamie Conlan’s identical record.

At 30, Conlan is five years older than his better-known brother Michael. Yet, he has been around the professional boxing scene for eight years.

He currently holds both the Commonwealth Super-Flyweight title as well as the WBC Silver International Super-Flyweight title.

And with a fight on June 17, Jamie is expected to come out victorious and will have him in line for a world title shot.

With a title eliminator expected between Conlan and Rex Tso, world champion Naoya Inoue is expected to vacate his title with the two men left now left to fight for the belt.

Interestingly, Rex Tso is involved with promotion Top Rank as is Jamie’s brother Michael so the possibilities of the two brothers on the same card is looking increasingly likely.

Speaking at a press conference to promote his June 17 bout, Jamie Conlan explained:

“Matt [Macklin, manager] and the team are in negotiations with Top Rank at the minute, and it seems like it’s all go for after the summer. Rex Tso, the Hong Kong fella, he’s going to be the opponent. ”

“Vacant WBO world title is what it looks like. The WBO champion is making a final defence at the end of May. It’s a possibility that he could be forced to make one in September – and if that happens, myself and Michael make a big bill here in November.”

That bill is likely to be in Belfast so, all going well, we could be in for a big fight night this summer.
