Michael Conlan goes for gold on Wednesday.
The Belfast boxer saw off the challenge of Dzmitry Asanau of Belarus to secure his place in the final of the World Boxing Championships and a chance at a gold medal.
Conlan put in an impressive performance at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiya Arena in Doha, claiming a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, and was rarely troubled by his opponent.Conlan is now just the third Irish boxer, alongside Katie Taylor and John Joe Nevin, to win medals at the Olympic Games, the European and World championships.
The 23 year old had already secured his place at next summer’s Olympics before this tournament, and now will face Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan on Wednesday for gold.
