Kellie Harrington takes on China’s Yang Wenlu in the Women’s Lightweight Olympic boxing final on Tuesday night.
The Dublin native, who won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Games, is aiming to become the first Irish boxer to win two Olympic gold medals.
Harrington will also compete at one of sport’s most iconic venues in her bid to make history.
Roland Garros, the home of the French Open tennis tournament, will host the Olympic boxing finals, with 15,000 spectators expected to be in attendance in what should be an incredible atmosphere.
A few days after Novak Djokovic beat Carlos Alcaraz in a dramatic Olympic tennis final, Harrington will take to the ring at the famous venue.
What is Kellie Harrington’s form going into the Olympic gold medal fight?
The Dubliner, 34, comes into the fight in excellent form after cruising through the tournament so far.
Harrington dispatched Brazilian Beatriz Ferreira, who she beat in the 2020 final, in the semi-finals.
Yang, her opponent on Tuesday night, is ranked number one in the Women’s 60kg division. The Chinese boxer also beat Harrington in the 2016 World Championship final.
Harrington, however, is upbeat going into the final as she aims to make Irish Olympic history by becoming the first boxer to win two gold medals.
“I’ve always said, I’m not looking at anything other than embracing the moment and enjoying it,” she said after her semi-final win.
“If I’m happy like the way I was happy in there today, then I’ll be happy. As long as I get out of the ring and I’m happy that’s all that matters, isn’t it?
“It’s only sport at the end of the day, it doesn’t define me as a person.
“I’m still Kellie Harrington whether I win or lose, I’m going to go home to a great family and an absolutely brilliant community.
“I know my community is super proud of me whether I win or lose, they are part of me and I am part of them and I honestly can’t wait to get home and celebrate this with them.”
