Irish boxing legend Katie Taylor added another title at the National Elite Female Finals.
Taylor scored a dominant decision victory over Shauna O’Keeffe to claim the vacant Irish lightweight title.. which marked the first time she ever won an Irish title. She defeated the Clonmel native 40-34, 40-36, 40-36.
Although Taylor is now a five-time Irish champion, this is the first time she has boxed her way to the title. Her four previous wins came via walkovers as she had no opponents to contest them.
The bout was also noteworthy for Taylor as it was the first time she fought without her father in her corner in over a decade. RTE reported earlier that Pete Taylor attended the fight, but Katie’s brother Lee took his place in her corner, along with interim coach Zaur Antia.
