Oh no.
Ireland’s disappointing Olympic Games in the boxing ring just got a hell of a lot worse as Katie Taylor was beaten by Finland’s Mira Potkonen in the last-eight of the women’s 60kg division.
Defending the gold medal she won in London four years ago, Taylor looked sluggish and never really found he stride against the tough 35-year-old Finn and was beaten on a split decision.
The first round was evenly fought, with Taylor and the 35-year-old Potkonen looking for an opening and feeling each other out.

The second was less assured with Taylor struggling to find her rhythm and land her combinations. All three judges scored it 10-9 to Potkonen.
The third seemed to be much better as Taylor landed some combinations, though the judges didn’t quite agree. Two scored it in Taylor’s favour but Judge C gave it to the Finn.
It was that decision that proved crucial as it meant Taylor had to win the final round.
Again she struggled as the Finn played for time and in the end got the result.
It’s been a tough time for Ireland’s much-heralded boxing team at the Rio Games and now just Michael Conlan remains in the competition.
